Roman Ruins
On the way to Fez, we got to stop and explore around some ancient Roman ruins. The city was controlled by the Romans, the Christian crusaders and then the Muslims.

Bush Camping
I'm surprised that I like bush camping so much more than camping at a normal camp site. Even without toilets, it's more of an experience.
Often cattle and sheep with their shepherds come through. Plus we're alone at night and can make a bigger fire and stay up later.

It was the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday- the first day of the Christmas season for us Americans! At a bush camp on our way to Fez, Nancy brought out some Christmas spirit:

Hamam
In Chechouan, known for it's blue color, I went to a Hamam, a traditional bathing house.
There was no being shy or modest.
We started off in a steamy sauna like area and stripped down to just underwear (it was all women). After steaming, we were ushered into another room where we were drenched with buckets of water, soaped up and scrubbed down.
I don't know if I even felt awkward or not.
A massage followed and after a week of not showering, it was the cleanest I ever felt!

We're adding another country to the list! Thanks to some unrest, we are rerouteing into Senegal. We hope to spend Christmas here if everything goes as planned.

I'm a Winner!
While overlanding, bad stuff is bound to happen. It's how you deal with it that counts.
Along that line, oasis has informal awards for first blood, first puke, etc. And guess what- I'm a winner! Three days ago I just got off the truck in time to upchuck my guts out. Yahoo.
Being sick only lasted for a day thankfully and I'm all better now. My acceptance speech for the award wasn't very glamourous though.

Morocco
Here is the post I saved on my iPad first before posting from the internet cafe plus some updates :
I am in Morocco!
I left the UK on the 20th and said goodbye to Alison from the bed and breakfast:
![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/blogger_img_proxy/AEn0k_topDxAUs8sEQcB8MHhq7AJQgC3OUzk0li8ekceZMR6Jq7z9AKzf-cKKcSnH5irrTWUzcQMg-HVZL2k5RKrfqnxj6h_cv9GRFOZWOej_PJlWbH4zGG32vsSTlM=s0-d)
I met my group at the airport and there are 18 of us now (most are in their 20's or 30's). They are 10 different nationalities among us and everyone is great! Quite the characters but still wonderful ;) Nancy is our leader and Steve is our driver.
We met for the first time, Nala (from the Lion King), our truck:
![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/blogger_img_proxy/AEn0k_sShcpj3l7I9YCbLmJ7aYblb62Jw-fU1zp6Ryp9z9ynK_FzbfhRTgTkU59fEyl5FBLcd4b9nQ2VevYbfvg4gWe0q2wsvNa5zxjHx_l2xOagrqxNVV9vIRvT0A=s0-d)
Steve has kindly nicknamed me Baby because one, I am the youngest, two, there are two Annas and an Ann, and three, I remind him of Baby from Dirty Dancing.
We walked around Gibraltar while we were still in Europe:

Now we are in Rabat Morocco. For the past three days we have split up and explored the city. I've gone to the old part of the city, Medina, the new chic part that is where all the government buildings are, and drank Moroccan mint tea by the Atlantic Ocean.

The Medina
Now will be day 5 with no shower. Yay baby wipes! :)
Bush camping, which is camping in any part of a clearing or forest we can find (so not a designated camping park), again tonight. Tomorrow night we may find some showers as we head towards Casablanca.
Wow, long post! But wait, there's more!!
The weather here has been mostly really nice. In the day it's been in the 70's and at night it gets rather cold but we've built a roaring fire that we both cook on and use to keep warm. It has rained a couple of times but only during the night. The first time I was trying to put up my tent it was pouring and pitch dark! All in all, I'm sure it's better weather than Washington ;-). Muahaha!
Last night for Thanksgiving (there are 3 Americans) we have veggie noodle stir fry with turkey. Not exactly the traditional meal but turkey none the less!
Salam!

Hello England, Goodbye England
Friday, November 18, 2011
I made it!
After 2 planes, a bus ride, and a taxi ride, I made it to my B&B in Luton, UK.
It all went very smoothly and I met some very kind, helpful people along the way. Thank you Chad from Iceland air who let me use his cellphone when the pay phones wouldn't work, my flying buddy, bus diver who looked like a blond Johnny Depp, and the little old lady who showed me the best taxis after I got off the bus in the dark.
It's morning now but last night I met Alison, who runs the Bakewell House B&B. She's very nice and a crack-up too. She showed me around and indeed gave me tea and cake upon arrival. English tea in England? Heck yes!
And it has to be said: I LOVE THESE ACCENTS!!! Sigh...

Safety First!
Today I took a self defense course. It was great learning how to escape or incapacitate someone if I were to be attacked. Likewise, here is something from the Oasis Overland website. Knowing that they (and I) have these skills makes me feel a little safer:
Last week at Oasis HQ our overlanding and office crew were joined by several overlanding colleagues to participate in a Travel Safety Training day. The course covered lots of topics including personal safety, assessing risk, emergency first aid, firearms and landmines. Do you know what to do if you are aggressively questioned at a check-point? Well the good news is our crew do!
The training was delivered by Charlie McGrath who spent 15 years as an Army Officer. He now provides safety training to a range of clients including journalists, Gap Year Travellers and business professionals. Charlie and his team also provided training to Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman prior to their ‘Long Way Round’ and ‘Long Way Down’ expeditions – trips that may of our travellers try to re-create by travelling from Cairo to Cape Town.
During the day the team watched several thought-provoking video clips which helped to highlight what to do in an emergency situation. In true overlanding style we didn’t bother with a conference room – oh no. Instead we watched video clips and listened to scenarios on the back of our truck called ‘Habibi’ and practiced first aid in our ‘outdoor classroom’! Who needs a posh room when you have a truck!
After a delicious lunch, the group set about going back to basics and thinking about how they would effectively deal with a road traffic accident or a situation where emergency first aid was given. This reiterated the skills that our crew already have. Oasis driver Nev volunteered to be the victim and ended up semi – undressed in the search to “see if he had any injuries”! Whilst it was amusing watching him play the manikin, it was a stark reminder for all our crew of the important of acting quickly with any emergency situation.
Our day ended and after bidding our farewells, we all remarked what a worthwhile and useful exercise it had been. In Oasis style, we lit the BBQ and debriefed into the wee-small hours!

Jungle Themes
A week and a half ago I turned 18! In honor of my up-coming adventures, I had a jungle-themed birthday party.
If you look closely, you can see the monkeys, lions, tigers, giraffes, hippos and more :-). Everything was decorated jungle style; it was adorable and I loved it!
Thanks to my parents and brother for putting it all together!
A week later was Halloween and keeping with the theme, I dressed up as a lion. I poofed up my hair which looked like this for awhile:
I debated putting this picture on the internet- I look like cousin It!
But the finished product looked good:
It was a roarin' good time! I'm not lion! ;)
